Advocate: a person who argues for or supports a cause or policy

An artist's advocate may advance the recognition or career of an artist in many ways. Some examples of famous artists' advocates: Mrs. Theo Van Gogh was an advocate of Vincent Van Gogh, Ms. Peggy Guggenheim was an advocate of Jackson Pollack, and Pollack's wife, Lee Krasner, was an advocate promoting his work.

Famous Artists' Advocates

Peggy Guggenheim

An American art collector, bohemian and socialite. Born to the wealthy New York City Guggenheim family, she was the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim, who went down with the Titanic in 1912, and the niece of Solomon R. Guggenheim, who would establish the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Peggy Guggenheim created a noted art collection in Europe and America primarily between 1938 and 1946.

Theo van Gogh

He was the younger brother of Vincent van Gogh. Theo's unfailing financial and emotional support allowed his brother to devote himself entirely to painting. Theo is widely known for his influence on his brother. However, this often overshadows the significant impact that Theo made on the art world as a renowned art dealer. Theo played a crucial role in the introduction of contemporary Dutch and French art to the public.

Johanna Bonger van Gogh

Johanna was the wife of Theo van Gogh. After Theo's death Johanna protected and promoted Vincent's body of work. We are enjoying the benefit of a cultural history which includes the art of van Gogh because of Theo and Johanna's legacy preservation program. Following the death in 1925 of Johanna, Theo’s widow, Vincent and Theo’s art collection passed to her son, the engineer Vincent Willem van Gogh, who loaned the paintings in 1930, until the Van Gogh Museum was built in 1973.
